For us, Reflections Eco-Reserve offers a place to reflect on the natural world, on our place within it, and on our inner lives – while watching light and sky mirrored across the Rondevlei’s still waters. On the edge of the Rondevlei, within the Wilderness Lakes of South Africa’s Garden Route, lies an 80-hectare protected Eco-Reserve where wetlands and wildlife are returning through ecological recovery.
These wetlands support extraordinary biodiversity – forming one of the most species-rich birding areas in the Western Cape – while wildlife moves quietly through connected conservation corridors. Just off the N2 along the Wilderness Lakes on the Garden Route, Reflections Eco-Reserve is surrounded by the Garden Route National Park and forms part of a Ramsar-recognised wetland of international importance, as well as an Important Bird & Biodiversity Area identified by BirdLife South Africa.
Across the reserve and its surrounds you’ll find rare, endemic and threatened species, supported by three threatened fynbos habitats: Garden Route Shale Fynbos, Garden Route Granite Fynbos and Knysna Sand Fynbos. These are woven together by a unique network of lakes and waterscapes.
Yet when we first arrived here more than two decades ago, this land was little more than sand and an invasive pine plantation. With patience, care and deep respect for natural processes, we began restoring the landscape – allowing wildlife to return and creating a place where people, too, can slow down, reconnect and restore themselves.
We met nearly 30 years ago while working at a private game lodge in South Africa, quickly discovering shared passions and ideals for conservation and wild, open spaces.
Tim’s journey led through some of the country’s most respected reserves, including Phinda and Kwandwe Private Game Reserves, both large-scale landscape rehabilitation programmes that motivated and inspired us to contribute to conservation in our own small way. Here he worked as a field guide and specialist guide across Africa. Angelique’s path brought complementary strengths in logistics, hospitality and marketing.
Together, we later refined our shared skills through lodge management in the Eastern Cape and mobile safaris in Namibia. By the time we arrived on this property along the Wilderness Lakes on the Garden Route in 2007, we carried both the experience and the conviction to begin restoring a landscape of our own.
Restoration comes first at Reflections Eco-Reserve. What was once degraded pine plantation has, over two decades, become a recovering mosaic of wetlands, fynbos and returning wildlife.
Today this landscape is alive with quiet nature movement and renewed ecological balance. For owners Tim and Angelique Carr, this recovery has come about due to sustained rehabilitation, from invasive alien clearing to indigenous tree planting, followed by the patience to simply allow nature to heal at her own pace.
When you stay here, along the Wilderness Lakes on the Garden Route, you do more than reconnect with what matters; you actively support the ongoing work of restoration, stewardship and biodiversity recovery. Today the reserve protects:
From the beginning, Reflections Eco-Reserve has been as much about how we live as where we live. We chose to go fully off-grid as a practical commitment to low-impact living.
Timber chalets were built because wood stores carbon rather than emitting it, while renewable energy systems reduce our footprint without compromising comfort.
Our intention has always been to keep Reflections Eco-Reserve personal, owner-run and grounded: a place where conservation and authenticity easily co-exist.

A defining feature of Reflections Eco-Reserve is the opportunity to explore and experience this restorative landscape through the eyes of its owner.
Tim is a specialist guide whose remarkable knowledge and long connection to the Wilderness Lakes offer something genuinely rare along the Garden Route. Whether for experienced birders or curious newcomers, his guiding opens a richer understanding of the land and the life it supports.
Join the many guests who have experienced the magic of Reflections. We look forward to welcoming you.
