SLOW DOWN AND STAY LONGER

Activities

Unhurried experiences at Reflections Eco-Reserve invite you to reconnect with the living Wilderness Lakes landscapes.

At Reflections Eco-Reserve, you can explore a living conservation landscape through guided and self-guided activities – with the option to join reserve owner and experienced nature guide, Tim Carr. From specialist bird guiding and sensory nature walks to sunset stillness and hands-on beekeeping, each experience reminds you to slow down and notice the world anew.

Access to walking trails and all guiding are included in the price.

Guided birding on the Garden Route

Reflections Eco-Reserve lies within one of the richest birding areas in the Western Cape – with 246 species recorded here. This makes it an exceptional base for birding in the Garden Route and for exploring bird habitats near George and Knysna. We are a Recommended Member of BirdLife South Africa.

Guided by a specialist bird guide or simply walking at your own leisure, you can explore wetlands, fynbos, thicket and forest edges within this Important Bird and Biodiversity Area recognised by Birdlife South Africa, in search of both iconic and elusive species.

  • Knysna Turaco, Knysna Warbler and Knysna Woodpecker
  • Seasonal gatherings at a significant Barn Swallow roost in South Africa
  • The quiet flight of African Grass Owl
  • Wetland and forest species rarely seen elsewhere

Whether you are an experienced birder or newly curious, each walk at Reflections Eco-Reserve holds the promise of something unexpected.

Sensory nature walks

Walking at Reflections Eco-Reserve is all about presence. Follow an easy 3.5km trail at your own pace, or explore with Tim as your guide, and see how nature is reclaiming a once-degraded landscape.

Along the way, you can enjoy:

  • Finding out how alien clearing and indigenous planting are bringing this landscape back to life
  • Foraging insights that reveal how people lived from this land thousands of years ago
  • A chance to slow your senses and notice the sights, sounds and scents of fynbos, wetland and forest
  • A visit to a Middle- to Late-Stone Age site dating from roughly 170 000 to modern day
  • Signs of wildlife moving through this restored conservation corridor, from tracks to fleeting encounters

Both guided or self-guided walks are suited to adults and kids.

Sunset walks with a delightful picnic

Follow a gentle path to one of the highest look-out points above the Wilderness Lakes. Enjoy carefully prepared refreshments, watch the sun set over Swartvlei, and on full-moon evenings, see moonlight reflecting off the lake’s surface.

Suited to both adults and children.

Beekeeping and honey tasting

The reserve is home to the Cape Honeybee, a species endemic to the Western Cape. Depending on the season, you may put on a bee suit, watch honey extraction, learn about solitary bees, and taste raw local honey.

Suited to both adults and kids. Not suited to those with severe honeybee allergies.
